28 Sep Statement by the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State on DHS Findings
Today the Department of Homeland Security confirmed what so many of us already knew- that in the 2016 election, Russian hackers tried to break into online voter registration systems and other parts of our election infrastructure. Instead of getting to the bottom of Russian attempts to influence and interfere with our elections, Donald Trump has set up a sham commission that the League of Women Voters says is hurling “false accusations” and “undermining the public’s confidence in our elections”. All in a sad effort to prove he won the popular vote.
Instead of trying to intimidate voters and pry into their personal data, the Trump Administration should end its wild goose chase and focus on the threat to our democracy presented by Russian aggression via their cyber attacks.
We call on the U.S. Congress to rally around the cause of giving states the resources to protect our election systems from foreign intervention, and find out how the Russians influenced our elections and how we can prevent it in the future.
